SOFTBALL: Handley gets abbreviated perfect game, Coginchaug advances

No. 2 Coginchaug 15, No. 18 Holy Family 0 (5 inn.): Mari Handley was perfect in five innings as the Blue Devils mercy-ruled Academy of the Holy Family in the second round of the Class S tournament Wednesday, 15-0.
Handley struck out 13 of the 15 batters she faced in the abbreviated perfect game. She didn’t walk a batter and Coginchaug was errorless on defense.
Offensively, the Shoreline champions scratched out 17 hits and scored seven runs in the third inning. Lauren Esposito was 3-for-5 with four RBIs, three runs and two stolen bases. Marissa Puchalski added three hits and three RBIs.
Coginchaug will host No. 10 Lyman Memorial in the quarterfinals Friday. The Blue Devils defeated Lyman on April 7, 4-2.
